NetSuite Error Codes You Will Actually Meet
The error codes that come up most while developing on and integrating with NetSuite, what each one means, and where to look for the detail.

NetSuite errors arrive as uppercase codes. They are consistent, so once you know a handful of the common ones your investigation time drops sharply — the code already tells you which layer the problem is in.
While writing scripts
| Code | Meaning | Check |
|---|---|---|
| SSS_MISSING_REQD_ARGUMENT | A required argument was not supplied | Parameter names and spelling; fieldId typos are common |
| SSS_INVALID_API_USAGE | The API was called in a context that disallows it | Some modules are not available in Client Scripts |
| SSS_USAGE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED | The governance allowance ran out | API calls inside a loop |
| SSS_TIME_LIMIT_EXCEEDED | Execution exceeded the time limit | Move the work to Map/Reduce |
| SSS_INSTRUCTION_COUNT_EXCEEDED | Too many instructions executed | A loop that never terminates |
| UNEXPECTED_ERROR | An internal failure with no clear category | Read the detail in the Script Execution Log |
While accessing data
| Code | Meaning | Check |
|---|---|---|
| RCRD_DSNT_EXIST | The record was not found | Wrong internal ID, or the record was deleted |
| INVALID_FLD_VALUE | The field value was rejected | Data type, or a list value that does not exist |
| INSUFFICIENT_PERMISSION | The role lacks permission | Role permissions, not the credentials |
| USER_ERROR | A business validation refused it | Thrown by a script or workflow; read the message |
While integrating from outside
| Code | Meaning | Check |
|---|---|---|
| INVALID_LOGIN_ATTEMPT | Authentication was refused | Realm / account ID, especially the Sandbox suffix |
| INVALID_LOGIN_CREDENTIALS | Credentials wrong or revoked | The token is still active and its role unchanged |
| NONEXISTENT_FIELD | The requested field does not exist | The internal field name on the REST endpoint |
Where to find the detail
- Script Execution Log — for SuiteScript errors; filter by script and time of the incident.
- System Notes on the record — to see who changed what, and when.
- Workflow History — when it is a workflow refusing, not a script.
- Login Audit Trail — for integration authentication failures.
